Exercise at My age???
64
I had to join in on this Health Hub Mob thing...I mean after all we are all not in our 20's or 30's or even 40's...like me I am 68 and fat and sassy and loving life as it is for me today..."100 years goes by faster then you think" ....a song by Kenny Chessney
Oh I have my health problems..Diabetes, arthritis, knee problems and of course overweight for my age...but I am in good health???lol Well I did almost die a few months back...but this event has changed my outlook on living and caring and EXERCISING.....so let me tell you a short story....(oops be right back have a doctor appt.) Was a foot doctor appt. is very important to have a pedicure every 2 months when you have diabetes...
So back to my story...after my near death experience and what my family went through I came to the realization exercise was of the utmost importance.....I needed to stay in a nursing home for 2 weeks to gather my thoughts, my strength and realize I needed to get into a better exercise mode.
The rehab they did there was intense and I did exercises on a machine called Nustep...you sit down to do this, and since my knees are so bad I really can't walk and it is very painful....but on this machine it is like walking and jogging...it keeps track of your heart rate, the calories you burn, how many steps you take and how many per minute. I has a tension setting from one to ten for difficulty in your workout. I began at 1 and am now up to 6 for 40 minutes a day at one time.
You can use just the foot work alone or the arm work alone or both at the same time. You can walk as fast as you want or as slow as you want. For as long as you want...and all the while watching t.v. or listening to music or praying. It is not too big of a machine, but does cost around 2,000. but heck I deserve it and so out came the charge card...It has wheels on one end so you can move it..(but is heavy) They set it up for you when it arrives and this is the only machine the company makes....
Anyway I love it...I am now getting a good work out and even workout with 3 lb. weights...because the more you do the better you feel. My heart rate is good and this machine keeps me breathing hard and even work up a sweat....there are others out there...I just prefered this one..sturdy and adjustable and easily done too.
I guess my point is "where there's a will..there is a way" and at any age it is wise to exercise..you just need to find what works best for you and go for it....:o) Hugs

LOL, exercise at my age? I like the free exercise best like walking! When I don't have a lot of time I make up for it by jogging! I walked 3 miles around the Lake today then later ate too many chunks of chocolate. I guess I'll be out walking again tomorrow! Happy Hugmobbing G-Ma!
As I would often say "you are just a young chicken." Promise you will twice as much to morrow.
Thank you for the idea
I´m so glad to know you´re doing it and I´m sure this hub it´s an example for many people out there. Never give up my darling, you´ll be fit in no time and walking will never be painful again ;)
Big HUGmob and kisses :D
Take care G ma
Working at a rehab and exersizing at a rehab myself now..It's hard. You do great G-Ma *hugs*
Ma,
I never liked walking, the car was made to drive. So I did it.
Val made walk five years ago, so one hour per day for 6 days a week. In the summer down at beach walking in the water one way on the wet sand coming back
Man am I getting thin. Good idea really
Use it or loose it! It is so important to take good care of yourself - then you can help those around you.
Hope you are well on the road to recovery, and ready to get even better.
You too mama, you are just great, was too late to see ur nice hubs. Good to have u here mama.
G-Ma, this is a nice hub and reminder to people that, as you say, "where there's a will there's a way".
People now know how vitally important a good exercise program is. I have close family members and friends who have suffered with diabetes and arthritis together, and there's no doubt about it - finding a way to exercise is a real challenge for people with such health problems. I suspect your post will be inspiring to a lot of people. :)
Good luck! Great hub with some great advice for anyone else out there who might be struggling with exercise. I have belonged to the same gym now for almost 20 years and I always tell people that I will pay the annual fees forever because the place has literally saved my life. It has kept me healthy through thick and thin, no matter what. Without it, I would be 20 pounds heavier and my health would be heading downhill. I think you're on the right road, just to feeling better!
Thanks G'Ma. We got going this week too. Running round our basement! On with the crazy music, on with the heart monitor, and off playing follow the leader with DH leading. Mr. 10 caught us at it when he should have been sleeping last night and joined in the fun. INterval workouts - no fancy equipment, just our feet! Laughed and laughed.
So good on you, keep it up. Get stronger and stay around longer!
Hey, I realised you wouldn't know who Merilyn was so logged in!
Tis me G'ma. You've a beaut attitude...
You go, girl (if I may be so casual). I'm living with RA and I too am learning how to exercise and strengthen. It's a hoot! Good for you. Glad you didn't die. Obviously, you work is not done here.
Your story is pure inspiration for people of all ages. I would love a machine like that if I could afford the price, and I like that it is non-impact. Walking is okay for me, but sometimes I would like to work out at home. Maybe someday I will be able to invest in a machine like this.
Good for you, G-Ma. It's not easy making into a discipline to excersize frequently. Stay healthy *hug*
Not enough, but the good part is that I am healthy, feel good and slender :)
G-Ma, a million thumbs up for you! My mom exercises and gets her regular pedicures, too. In fact, my mom is a rabid dog about exercise. She goes to her senior center twice a week for an exercise program designed for folks her age (can't tell you how old she is...she'd kill me if I did).
Your comment about "...what my family went through" really rang a bell. My mom was in rehab for many weeks, because of a car accident and complications, and she doesn't want her family to go through that with her again. She's keeping herself in top form. Need I say that this is also about independence? She doesn't want to lose it, and doesn't want her family to deal with the consequences if she does.
I salute you! Go for it, girl!
Your fan, Sally
Hi G-Ma. It is really great you try to keep yourself in shape - and sure it can be done in any age, one just need a will, the way comes :) Hugs! :)
I am fine G-Ma, thanks. :)
And I'm glad you are, too :) Hugs :)
G-ma, keep it up, I'm sure you will be younger by the day. Exercise truly adds hours and days even year to our life. You inspire me! good going! =)
Hi G-Ma, it's wonderful to know you are "on the move." Physical inactivity will make our muscles pretty tired sooner than we realize. Dayzeebee and I are going biking nowadays. We used to walk and hike. But I still do some yoga, belly dancing or swimming every so often to spice up the routine. Keep up the great workout! :)
It is wise to exercise. :)
Where I live there is an exercise class on that is call some thing live sit and be fit maybe there is a program like that on your TV. But I think you are doing a fine job, hope I can exercise at 68. Great Hub as always.
Hi G-ma. I think it's really great that you're working out and I'm impressed by the three pound weights. Exercise is helpful with diabetes and not only do you feel good, you look good! Keep it up! Minnow
hope your exercise programme is going well. My mother is 61, and fitter than most people half her age. She swims, cycles, and walks a lot.
good for you for sticking to it!
I know you can still throw a few karate kicks when you have to...
At 62 I seem to be in fairly good condition. In the winter I get a lot of excercise cutting, hauling, splitting and stacking firewood. It's our only source of heat.
In the warmer weather I usually do a routine 5 days a week. Because of my wife's disablility we have a Precor eliptical stepper. It provides a tremendous cardiovascular workout with virtually zero impact on the knees and spine. I generally spend an hour on that at a moderate resistance level followed by at least one hundred crunches and as many pushups as I can manage. We also have a Bowflex unit but it currently languishes at my fathers home in Texas. Once I'm able to get it back here I'll start using it again as well.
I guess being a laborer all my life has had some positive impact on my fitness. Most of the work I've done was physically demanding. Then, just by chance, when I hit forty I became addicted to body building. I just about lived in the gym for several years. I suppose that also has had a positive impact.
Remaining physically and mentally active is crucial to ones well being. The ancient Romans knew; sond body, sound mind. Too bad they didn't apply such common sense to their politics.
Love is a powerful medicine G-Ma. It's been known to work miracles. We do what we can.
Hi,
Long long time indeed! I am happy to know that you are doing well, and working out, to boot. Well, let me say 'Join the Club'. I work out, too, have been for a long time. But in the last 3 years, I have been at it in a more disciplined fashion. I manage to work out about 40 minutes or so, Monday through Friday. Longer than that can be boring. But I agree with you that it does a lot of good to you, physically and psychologically. Weekends turn out to be more fun.
I wish you more and more fun and superb health so that you continue spreading love and affection all around for ever.
Hugs
Vaidy
swimming is great for the older person, you just lose the pull of gravity and can get a nice workout without stress on your joints
I have a bad back, so have found it hard to find exercise that I can do, but have just started going to the gym at my apartments with my daughter. The incline bike seems to work well for me. So, maybe I will be able to lose what I've put on since I lost my back. Thanks for the hub and the encouragement. You're an inspriration.

You put me to shame and I am more than 20 years younger than you. Gonna have to start exercising regularly. :)
