G-Ma's First Dog... short story #1
70
MY LITTLE BEAR
Nothing was planned but the graduation for her grandson from high school...but God has His ways and this old woman, feeling lonely, just couldn't resist this baby French (mini) Poodle. Why? because she had to put her 17 year old cat down just a few months ago.
The poodle was so soft , sweet and had a sister along with a brother that still needed a home. Actually she saw his sister a chocolate brown ( not to common) poodle at the graduation party.
The family and friends that attended the party all encouraged G-Ma saying she needed company, something to get her active, something to help her not feel so lonely and alone, to keep her company. Even to talk too? Though she thought she was doing fine talking to herself.
G-Ma wondered how in the heck a dog could possibly do all the things they kept saying and why was she even considering this? Having had a few glasses of her favorite wine, in celebration of her grandson's High School graduation, she couldn't help hold the adorable puppy and smell that puppy breath feeling the soft hair of this chocolate brown poodle. She told them " I will maybe think about it when I have not been drinking wine, and I appreciate all your concern"...yeah sure, it was gonna cost her money from what savings she had , she was the one to train and put up with a baby puppy. Having been a child caregiver for 35 years she was aware of the fact that it would be a chore for a while...Hummmm?
G-Ma had every way out, but just couldn't seem to find the right one , so the plans were made for her friend and granddaughter to pick up the puppy (since it was a journey that was not convenient for G-Ma). Her sweet granddaughter kept the male puppy for 3 days till she could deliver him to his new home with G-Ma and she brought along her grandson (who was willing to build a pen for the puppy off of the back deck.) The reason for this was where G-Ma lives they have Raccoons, Eagles, Hawks and other critters to worry about.
In the few days G-Ma had before the puppy arrived she did a lot of research on the internet to find out what she could about caring for a dog. Also some of the information was found here on the HubPages...She was actually frantic about this adventure she had committed too, paying $400.00 dollars for a puppy???? she must be loosing her frigging mind...or maybe the wine effected her sanity?
Some how she was very excited about the week-end coming up and getting to meet this little male puppy. She had seen several adorable photo's from her granddaughter, Oh My!!! and she was not disappointed, love at first sight, and I might add, the love has grown every day since. First few days and nights were a bit hectic; her granddaughter had been very patient with this puppy and helped her G-Ma get it together. Understanding the signs the puppy had for potty time and eating time. How he liked to play and get into mischeif...toys he liked and the fact that he was 'carrier trained' (which was a big help) and still is.
About a week later G-Ma's sister came to visit from California , and she has a six year old Boston Terrier, named Bubba so "Little Bear" met his first dog friend ( his new name, cause he looks like a little bear). He was so happy , they got along just fine, after the older male dog let the younger one know who was in charge. Oh My Goodness, they ran all around the house, rolling, nipping, sharing toys and running to their owners for approval.
Was so fun to see and watch these creatures of God just being themselves, too bad more of us can't be so relaxed...who would believe a puppy dog could change one's life? could make one look so differently at what un-conditional love really is. My Guardian Angels definetely directed me to the best dog I could have chosen.

What a sweet story. Little Bear looks adorable and I particularly loved the photo of him with his first doggie friend, Bubba.
It was also good to "hear" the joy that adopting him has brought into your life.
Great story, and voted that way!

Your pup is adorable and I hope you enjoy him for years. This is a great story.
My first thought in the first picture was how much like a little bear she looked, so the naming was very good! (There is a cartoon "Little Bear" have you seen it? It is so easy to get attached to these loving babies. May you both have long life.
