When To Seek Help
There are many things that can cause forgetfulness, and many of them are reversible. Work with your doctor to determine what is going on with your memory and what can be done about it.
The causes of Alzheimers are poorly understood, but it's effect on brain tissue has been demonstrated clearly. Alzheimer"s damages and kills brain cells. It is a complex disease likely caused by a combination of factors - such as infection or reduced circulation - and genetic susceptibility.
Many older adults are on multiple medications that may impair their ability to think clearly.
Seeking help can be decided by some of these things listed or all of them
1. Asking the same questions repeatedly.
2. Difficulty remembering common words when speaking.
3. Mixing up words - saying "bed" instead of "table" for an example.
4. Being unable to complete a task. such as following a recipe.
5. Misplacing items in inappropriate places, such as putting a wallet in the refrigerator.
6. Getting lost while driving on familiar streets.
7. Undergoing sudden changes in mood or behavior forno apparent reason.
8. becoming less able to follow directions.
To help rule out some of these other problems, here is a list of questions you may want to ask your doctor.
a. Could some of my medications be causing forgetfulness?
b. Could I be dehydrated?
c. Might I have a concussion?
d. Could I be depressed?
e. Could I be drinking too much?

'A multitude of things can cause forgetfulness' - There are indeed many things that attribute to Memory loss, from self-invoked to disease and many other things besides. One I can personally vouch for is 'MS'.
Many things can also help with Memory loss, or at least compensate, other than medication etc, Personally I live by everyday acknowledging "I will not surrender - I will not give in". However, it's also really important to take care of yourself mentally, physcially and indeed spiritually (in whatever form you choose personally).
No Miracles, just determination and 'stubborness'.
I'm an individual and of course my ideals and opinions are just that.. My own..
One thing I am sure of is that you have to remain positive, and/or Be around positive people/influences..

Hi G-Ma Johnson, I suffer from many memory problems at 49 years of age, due to MS, but I can totally relate to my elders and wonder sometimes what condition my memory will be in once I am 60+, if it is this bad now. LOL Your article is very informative, especially about medications adding to the problem.

I have a parent in a long term care facility and he has Alxheimer's Disease. One of the most devistating things for us was watching him go downhill so quickly. he was on Aricept for awhile but it just didnt work anymore. Even though he is here physically, the person he was is gone. It is heartbreaking to watch him try and eat paper plates and such.
The first indicator that told us something was wrong when he could not remember basic words.
Thanks for this important Hub!
