Hand washing Awareness
According to the U.S. centers for disease Control, hand washing is the single most effective way to prevent the spread of disease.
Infectious diseases spread through hand-to-hand contact includes the common cold, flu and several gastrointestinal disorders, such as infectious diarrhea.
Inadequate hand hygiene also contribute to food-related illnesses, such as salmonella and E. coli infection.
Although it's impossible to keep your hands germ-free, times exist when it's critical to wash your hands to limit the transfer of bacteria, viruses and other microbes. Always wash your hands :
Reduce your risk
After using the restroom
Before eating
After changing a diaper---wash the diaper-wearer's hands, too
After you pet a dog, cat or other animals
Before and after preparing food
After blowing your nose
After coughing or sneezing into your hands
Before you touch your eyes, nose or mouth
Before and after treating wounds or cuts
Before and after touching a sick or injured person
Before and after you visit a hospital or nursing home
After handling garbage
After you touch plants or soil
After you come in contact with any body fluids or touch items that may have come in contact with body fliuds.
Before inserting or removing contact lenses
When using public restrooms
Proper Hand Washing techniques :
When washing with soap and water:
wet your hands with warm, running water and apply liquid or clean bar soap. Lather well
rub your hands vigorously together for at least 15 seconds. Studies show it is the length of time spent washing, not the type of soap, that makes the difference
scrub all surfaces, including the backs of your hands, wrists, between your fingers and under your fingernails
rinse well
dry hands with a clean/disposable towel
use a towel to turn off the faucet.
Hand sanitizers are a great alternative to hand washing, particulary when soap and water aren't available. They're actually more effective in killing bacteria and viruses that cause disease. However, some "waterless" hand sanitizers don't contain alcohol, so ONLY USE THE ALCOHOL-based products. but if your hands are visibly dirty, wash with soap and water instead.

In the tropical parts of India, water is used instead of paper for washing almost all the time, everywhere. When we come indoors, we wash our feet. Before and after meals, we wash our hands, and we don't have toilet paper or tissues usually at home. It's also a green policy; saves paper.
Yes, Misha, it dries the skin, but we are used to this, for generations.
G-Ma,
You are right on. These are all of the recommendations that health care workers have to follow. I have learned, after reading enough infectious control material, that it's actually washing with hot water that dries the skin, creating micro tears and cracks on the hands. Those micro-openings are what increase the potential for germ transmission! My hands thank me for using lukewarm water at work!
The point I was tying to make is simply pay attention..do what you can..no one asks for more..but the more you do..the more we are all protected... you Me, the children..the elderly, all of us. Actually I agree with you all the way Kat07 was more upset with Misha's comment...But kenny helped me there...as well as you..we are a family in one way oe the other..many Greeting to you for this Christmas Season my dear..Bless you...G-Ma :O) You too Misha..you are special to me..g-ma:o)
No, I don't do all the things listed here, but I will! Good to learn!
G-Ma, don't be upset with me, please. I did not mean to... I'm just kidding around having fun - and trying to make people *think* what they do and why they do it ;)
And I don't believe germs *cause* illness, by the way... They are definitely the part of a mechanism, but they are not the trigger, not the cause - they are just a medium, middleman, link, tool...
Nice things, im not doing all but atleast some I manage to wash my hands.. good thing you remind me of washing my hands how often...
Great tips G-ma.Micro organisms are not visible so it is best to follow the instructions you have given.Serve me more of your experiences.
Noooooooo.....Abhinaya except you're ready to pay consultation fees to G-ma !!!
A good Hub - we advocate frequent hand washing to reduce the risk of catching colds. One tip - when washing your hands, you should take enough time that you can sing Happy Birthday twice while your are washing & rinsing.
Hi G-Ma, we do make sure the kids wash their hands before and after eating. :-) The adults have to do that too. Thanks for the reminder.
Hi G-Ma, curiosity got me here, "What's In Your Hands?" LOL Last night was a quiet night so I found myself reading hubs and commenting and learning. hehe Well, expect me to visit more of your "old" hubs time to time esp. the ones I haven't read yet. :-)

LOL I could argue that cleaning your hands too often and too hard is bad for your immune system (gets de-trained) and your hands' skin (get dry and irritated by cleaning chemicals)...
And your list is definitely way too excessive to my liking :)
